What is Gynaecology?

Gynaecology deals with reproductive health and the functions and diseases specific to women and girls. Its functions include producing gametes called eggs, secreting sex hormones (such as oestrogen), providing a site for fertilization, gestating a foetus if fertilization occurs, giving birth to a baby, and breastfeeding a baby after birth.

The external genital organs, or vulva, are held by the female perineum and mammary glands (breasts). These are the mons pubis, labia majora and minora, clitoris, vestibule, vestibular bulb, and glands. The vagina, cervix, uterus, ovaries, and uterine or fallopian tubes compose the internal genital organs. Gynecology deals with the diseases and abnormalities of this branch.
